Cedalion wines embody the values of their maker: Subtlety, singularity, and – in the case of the flagship wines – longevity. Flagship wines are made from single vineyards chosen for their uniqueness and ability to produce a premium example of the varietal. They are a true reflection of the site in any given year.

All wines adhere to Sam’s winemaking philosophy: Hand harvesting at optimum ripeness, meticulous sorting and sympathetic intervention in the winemaking process.

    2015 Single Vineyard Chardonnay – Arae

    Made from the same spectacular tiny plot in Church Bay as our 2014 and 2013 Chardonnay, the 2015 vintage is the best expression, to date, of this unique vineyard site.

    The 2015 vintage conveyed lime, grapefruit, lemon zest and gunflint, lending the wine a pristine citrus and white floral aroma, which integrates beautifully with subtle acacia and cedar notes.  This is not a rich, ripe wine; it is a more linear, saline style that will improve for many years. The wine’s trademark zingy acidity and salty finish is present in abundance.

    2014 Single Vineyard Chardonnay – Mineral

    In 2014, an additional chardonnay cuveé was crafted from the flagship Arae vineyard to illustrate the subtle nuances of the site.

    The spectacular southwest facing 0.9 hectare plot on the Te Ara estate in Church Bay has a mix of clay and limestone soils and has been recognised by world-renowned wine professionals as producing highly mineral wines.

    This wine was deliberately crafted to intensify natural minerality – both aromatically and texturally.  Spontaneous fermentation at a warmer temperature helped impart more flinty aromas and salty expression on the palate, while partial malolactic fermentation built a more complex acid profile.

    In 2014 the site and winemaking conveyed lime, grapefruit and white floral notes – a more distinctly citrus profile than the Cedalion flagship chardonnay.

    2014 Single Vineyard Chardonnay – Arae

    Our first vintage – the Cedalion 2013 Single Vineyard Chardonnay – sold out within months of launch, after turning heads in the London and Japanese wine scenes.

    In 2014 the site conveyed more citrus characters and has a greater new oak component than its leaner 2013 counterpart, made possible by the richness of this superb vintage. Earthy aromas and a savoury complexity mingle with a salty acid profile echoing the distinctive zesty, mineral finish of the 2013.

    Fruit was harvested from the spectacular Arae vineyard, a southwest facing 0.9 hectare plot on Te Ara Estate in Church Bay. The 14 year-old vineyard’s soils are a mix of clay and limestone – ideal for producing a cool climate, long-living chardonnay.

    Don’t miss out on this sublime vintage – possibly one of the best the island has seen.

    2013 Single Vineyard Chardonnay

    Grown and produced on Waiheke Island, Sam’s first vintage is the 2013 Cedalion Single Vineyard Chardonnay, available now by allocation.

    The fruit is from the spectacular Arae Vineyard, a southwest facing 0.9 hectare plot on Te Ara Estate in Church Bay. The 12 year-old vineyard’s cool soils are a mix of clay and limestone – ideal for producing a more mineral Chardonnay with moderate sugars.

    In 2013 the site conveyed white floral, lime, pomelo and background flinty notes that benefited from subtle new oak. This wine has a distinctive salty, lean acid profile that provides a zesty structure and the foundations for long cellaring.

    2015 Single Vineyard Syrah

    Cabernet may have put Waiheke Island on the map, but Syrah has propelled it into the stratosphere – and this is only the beginning. Grown and produced on Waiheke Island, the fruit for our Cedalion 2015 Single Vineyard Syrah was harvested from a one hectare, southwest facing plot known as Block 31 at the eastern end of the Island. Steeply terraced and planted with two different clones (Chave and Hermitage), the 15 year-old vineyard has highly mineralised clay soils that promote good acidity and tannin structure. The vineyard soil and cool aspect ensures that the resulting wines will keep their freshness and varietal qualities for years to come.

    At bottling the 2015 Block 31 seemed to be more influenced by the Hermitage clone than the Chave clone. It is a purer, more refined and less brooding Syrah than the 2014. Raspberry and fresh blueberry notes mingle with violet, cedar and an abundance of black pepper. The wine has fine-grained tannins and as such has a texture that is even more elegant than the understated 2014. Slightly higher acidity gives more lift to the palate and promises reward for those who have the patience to cellar.

    2014 Single Vineyard Syrah – Clonal

    In 2014, an additional cuvée was crafted from the syrah vineyard Block 31 to illustrate the subtle nuances of the site.

    A one hectare, southwest facing plot at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Block 31 is steeply terraced and planted with two different clones (Chave and Hermitage).  The 14 year-old vineyard has highly mineralised clay soils that promote good acidity and tannin structure. The vineyard soil and cool aspect ensures that the resulting wines will keep their freshness and varietal qualities for years to come.

    Produced exclusively from the Hermitage clone, which has smaller berries, tighter bunches and slightly lower yields than the Chave clone, this wine has distinctly more pepper and fresh red fruits, finer tannins and more pronounced acidity than its flagship counterpart.

    The same winemaking techniques were employed for all parcels. Low intervention and respectful use of oak ensured that vineyard and clonal characters can be clearly identified.

    In 2014 the site conveyed red fruits, violets, jasmine and a roasted cracked pepper note.

    2014 Single Vineyard Syrah – Block 31

    Blueberries and raspberries dominate at this early stage. Flinty aromas keep the bouquet tight, but hint at the promise of longevity. A touch of white pepper and background cedar spice offer more complexity. The palate has silky texture with lovely acidity that provides freshness and balance. Only a small amount of new oak was used to balance the site’s primary qualities.

    2015 Single Vineyard Rosé

    An illustration of Sam’s view that well made rosé deserves a place alongside serious white and red wines, this new wave crafted rosé has serious varietal expression. Only 600 bottles were produced.

    Free from oak and hand harvested from the Hermitage clone of our syrah vineyard, this rosé reflects the site in all its splendour. Fresh red summer fruits, hints of white pepper and jasmine and undertones of fresh thyme precede a chalky, bone-dry finish.

    Made for optimum consumption at its summer release and perfectly paired with fresh seasonal produce, this wine will continue to acquire new and attractive characters for at least four to five years.
